Answering the call of nature

Toilet

How our donation will help African communities

Hundreds of older and disabled people in Africa were able to answer the call of nature more comfortably (!) thanks to a donation we made to Zimbabwe. We gave 10 toilets to Operation Sunshine, a South West charity which sends practical aid directly to communities in East Africa. The loos came from properties in Whitleigh and St Budeaux which were renovated as part of our Decent Homes programme.

Lavatories in much of Africa are mainly long-drops – usually not much more than a hole in the ground – but older people, the disabled and pregnant women often find them too uncomfortable to use. We were able to send the toilets thanks to help from our contractor at the time, Frank Haslam Milan. The toilets were cleaned and shipped out with other goods in a 40ft container to Zimbabwe in 2011.
